We told you at the beginning of this series that we were going to give you a wealth of information that would help you plan the wedding of your dreams. In the first post we gave you tips on selecting the date for your wedding. In the second we talked about selecting the right venue. In the third post we talked about the importance of selecting the right vendors to help you make everything run smoothly. Now, it’s time for the final piece in this four part series. The wedding planner’s secret!
We have helped hundreds brides make their dreams a reality. And it has been such a joy for us to play a small role in helping you as you plan the biggest event you’ll ever be a part of.
You know, this past summer we had the pleasure of working with one of the best clients we’ve ever had. Kathy has to be the picture perfect bride. Not only did she come to every meeting we had with new ideas, she always had a presence about her that made you want to love her. On her wedding day you could just tell she was going to have a wonderful time. She stepped out of the car when she arrive at the ceremony site and she was glowing. She grinned from ear to ear, hugged every neck she could find, high-fived the pastor and her eyes glowed every time she saw her soon-to-be husband.
Once they were married the reception was an amazing party. She and Steve walked the room hand in hand greeting all of their guests. Their first dance was perfectly timed and you could feel the happiness in the air.
You know what made Kathy different than most brides? She set in her mind that she was going to have the time of her life on this day. And nothing was going to get in her way.
This is a free piece of information for you. It’s almost as important as what we said in the last post about not trying to do everything yourself. No one can ensure you have the perfect wedding day… except you. If you go into the process with a worrisome mindset, if you fret over every detail, if you can’t let go and enjoy what you’ve planned, no one will be able to make you happy. The difference between a happy bride and an unhappy bride is the way she thinks. Set your mind to have a wonderful experience and you will.
Having said that, there is one thing that you can do to put the odds in your favor when it comes to happiness. In the last post I told you that there is one thing that we do for every single wedding. If we didn’t do it, all bets are off. The caterer might show up after the reception is over. The DJ might play The Chicken Dance for the entrance of the bridesmaids and the officiant could perform a buddhist ceremony for a Catholic couple. So what’s the secret?
A written plan.
My husband used to work for a booking agency where his responsibility was to plan extensive book tours for multiple New York Times best-selling authors. He would book the travel and logistics for three week tours that hit 40 cities. Everything from private jets to custom coaches, limos to hotels. He would book radio and tv interviews that started at 4am and the schedule would be packed until midnight. In every circumstance he had a motto; “If it’s on paper, it works.”
We still live by that motto today. There is something about a written plan that makes things move. Whether it’s a budget, goals, this planning series. It all starts by putting finger to keyboard and getting a plan in place.
And that’s the secret. You have to have a plan in place that details the timeline for your wedding day.
I want you to take a second and think about the most amazing wedding that you’ve ever been to. I don’t mean the most expensive or the most lavish. I mean, what was the last wedding that you went to and you didn’t want to leave?
Now I want you to think about this. What do you remember the most about that wedding? Now, if you were already engaged when you went there’s a good chance you were paying more attention than most. But if you left and gushed to your friends about it, you probably remember that you had a wonderful time.
There’s always going to be someone that can outspend you. There may be weddings that you go to in the future and say, “Oh, I wish we had thought of that!” But I can promise you that if you plan your day and think of all of the little things there’s one thing that you’ll walk away feeling… happy.
If you ask someone who has recently been to a wedding what color the flowers were, how many do you think would get it right? Unless there was something out of the ordinary, they probably wouldn’t be able to name the vast majority of the food that they had. We were at a wedding this past weekend and the only thing I can remember having was some carrot cake. Not because the food wasn’t good, but because in the grand scheme of things the most important item was that I was having a good time.
You have the ability to create a perfect wedding. You’ve found the right man and now the rest of this process will prepare you to spend the rest of your lives together. Your attitudes toward one another during this time are going to tell you a lot about your future relationship. How you communicate, how you handle disagreements. But in all of it make sure that you keep in mind that at the end of the night when all of the lights go out, the band has stopped playing and the guests have gone home… you are married. That’s when this brand new phase of life begins.
You can make sure that you have a blast on the day that you’ve worked so hard to plan! You mom and mother-in-law can sit back and cry happy tears as you dance with your dad. Your dad and father-in-law can enjoy their drinks as their friends pat them on the back and congratulate them on what superb choices you and your fiancé have made. Your bridesmaids can dance the night away without a care in the world. And you, you can put on your dress, show up, look beautiful and have the time of your life. It really is possible.
And we want to help.
